It’s a word that send thousands volt electricity to our neurons making us numb and frigid. The term itself is terror defining. It’s a troubling insult of the highest degree of grand standing. Calling someone’s actions “terrorism” and the person a terrorist by extension, is as sever charge that can be laid against someone in this day and age. It has the same nuance as “child molester” or “infant killer.” A terrorist has done something that offends the conscience and whose intent is to terrorize, frighten, harass and otherwise aiming innocents.
The objective is generally to call someone a crazy psycho terrorist or a murderer certainly strikes fear into the hearts grounds. Nevertheless, serial killers do their horrible acts for selfish interest and gratification. Almost without exception, a terrorist feels that he or she is working for some even higher dimensional aim. Many people associate terrorists with religious fanaticism, but this is not an accurate frame. Terrorists do what they do from radical motivation which may be religious, political; ethical or a blend or neither. They may be environmental fanatics, or motivated by extreme devotion to animal rights.
Of course, to Americans, the terrorist attack of 11 September 2001 is the most plausible and shocking definition of terrorism and what a terrorist is and what does it mean. Conversely, in Northern Ireland, the severe soul scars from years of terrorism by the IRA and the Protestant paramilitary branches are still visible and alive like green wounds. What of the 2005 attack on the London Underground? Or decades of terrorist actions on both sides of the hatred driven conflict in Israel and Palestine? Regardless of the cause, when that cause becomes uncontrollable and hyper-violent, it is terrorism and its participants are truly terrorists. They strongly feel the ends justify their means.
A terrorist may be perfectly sincere in his or her motifs. He or she may be convinced of the rightness of their critical weapon based actions. However, modern humanity agrees that actions reckoned to sprout terror, simply to make a point or further an agenda, constitute tragic terrorism. A terrorist often does not think of himself as such and they recognize themselves as a soldier for martyrdom. He may call himself a rebel, a freedom-fighter, a soldier of justice, a soldier for rights etc. They might even be insulted that someone would think of them as a terrorist. But if he or she deliberately engages in attention arresting actions customized to harm or kill innocent people, that sabotage property and that robs blameless people of their right to a peaceful everyday existence, that person is a terror or death dealer.
