Reports are swirling that 9-year-old, Rubina Ali, child star of Slumdog Millionaire, was offered up for sale, by her father, to a rich Dubai sheikh. And now her father, Rafiq Qureshi has been arrested by Indian cops, who are waiting to review an undercover video of the deal making made by reporters from News of the World.
Rubina’s mother, who left the family in 2001, apparently filed a complaint with the cops when she learned about her ex-husband’s intentions. She said, “my elder daughter had informed me…I did not believe he would actually go through with it.” But she also claims that Quereshi and his new wife are desperately trying to cash in on Rubina’s recent Oscar winning success.
Quereshi says he was approached by the sheikh, who said his wife was unable to have children and they would like to raise Rubina as their own, but he has no intentions of selling her. He and Rubina are giving details of their meeting with the sheikh at a fancy hotel, where they say Rubina was showered with gifts of chocolate and gold jewelry.
Quereshi says, “I politely said Rubina is happy with me and wanted to leave. After this they made an offer of money in English which I did not understand. Then they requested me to leave her there overnight and take her in the morning. I refused and took Rubina away with me.”
However, reporters from News of the World claims that Quereshi was the one demanding money and that Rubina’s uncle also took part in the negotiaions. Reporters quote him as saying, “The child is special now. This is not an ordinary child. This is an Oscar child!” They were apparently asking for $300,000.
Rubina is saying that she does not want to go anywhere and wants to remain with her family. She said, “I trust my father. He loves me. He has never said that he wants to give me up. I did meet an uncle and auntie in a big hotel but it was not about adoption. I will never give any foreign journalist an interview again.”(twirlit news)
