Iran has delivered new proposals on its controversial nuclear program to the United States, Russia, China and other world powers.

In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki handed the package of proposals Wednesday to representatives of the six nations (the so-called P5+1 group) that have been trying to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear development program.

Details of the package are not known, but Mottaki has said Tuesday he hopes Iran’s proposals will spark a new round of nuclear talks.

Initial reactions to Iran’s proposals were guarded. President Barack Obama’s chief spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said Iran must live up to its responsibilities and end what he called its “illicit” [unlawful] unlawful nuclear program.

U.S. spokesman Robert Gibbs said that is the opinion not just of one country, but of the entire world community.

Another senior U.S. official said Wednesday that Iran is “moving closer” to being able to build a nuclear warhead.

The world powers most directly involved in the Iranian nuclear question – the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council (the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain), plus Germany – are considering imposing additional sanctions against Iran if Tehran’s nuclear program continues unchecked and without international review.

Speaking in Vienna Wednesday at a governing-board meeting of the U.N. nuclear-monitoring group, the International Atomic Energy Agency, U.S. envoy Glyn Davies said Iran may already have accumulated enough enriched uranium to produce one nuclear weapon.

Earlier this week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country will not negotiate on what he calls its right to develop nuclear technology, although he offered to ways to cooperate on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

collapse

At least six people were killed, three suffered injuries and several remained trapped under debris after a three-storey shopping centre collapsed on Wednesday in this Haryana city adjoining the national capital.

Six bodies have already been taken out of debris. Three people who have suffered injuries were rescued earlier,” Faridabad deputy commissioner Praveen Kumar said.

“Rescue operations are in last stages and will continue for a few more hours,” Kumar added.

The injured were undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.

The building, housing a popular shopping centre, in the New Industrial Township (NIT) Phase I came crashing down with a deafening roar at around 12.45 pm.

Nearly 2,000 people gathered at the spot as rescue teams worked to clear the debris. Ten cranes were working at the spot to assist authorities in the rescue operations. Fire brigade and ambulance services were also present.

According to a senior Faridabad police official: “The two men whose bodies have been taken out of debris were apparently working in the complex.”

“Some repair work was going on in the building. Heavy generator sets were installed on top of the building,” the officer added.

Asked if the heavy generator sets could be the reason behind the collapse, Praveen Kumar said: “The exact reason is not confirmed yet but the generators.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram Sunday said Pakistan is showing ‘unwillingness’ to prosecute Hafiz Saeed, Lashkar-e-Taiba chief and the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks that left as many as 170 people dead last year.

‘(While) covering up is a very strong word, there is for some strange reason (an)unwillingness to take investigation forward (by Pakistan),’ Chidambaram told private news channel NDTV in an interview to be telecast Monday.

The home minister’s statement comes after Pakistan last week rebuffed the sixth and latest dossier as being a ‘rehash’ of earlier information on Hafiz Saeed and which was deemed inadequate to start a prosecution.

Revealing details of what India had given in the dossiers, Chidambaram said: ‘We know when (lone surviving terrorist Ajmal Amir) Kasab first met Hafiz Saeed and where. We know what Hafiz Saeed told the trainees. We know at least a couple of places where the training took place and that Hafez visited those training camps’.

Further, India has also said Hafiz Saeed had also given the terrorists aliases as well as tested their skills.

‘We know that he (Saeed) was accompanied by a person described as major general sahib. Hafiz Saeed told this person to set up 10 targets. Kasab fired at target number 4,’ said Chidambaram.

He added that Saeed had also made the ‘farewell call’ and also issued the ‘final instructions’ to the 10 terrorists in the Mumbai attacks.

‘So all this is known. Places, approximate dates, names, visits by Hafiz Saeed. On face of this evidence, how does a prosecutor say that I have no leads to investigation?’ Chidambaram said.

A meeting convened by the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh to condole the death of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ended here on Sunday as supporters of his son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy demanding that he be made the next chief minister.

Security personnel escorted Acting Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, state Congress chief D. Srinivas, union minister Jaipal Reddy and other senior leaders to safety as Jagan’s supporters tried to mob them at the meeting held at Gandhi Bhavan, the party headquarters.

Holding placards and pictures of YSR and Jagan, the party activists did not allow Srinivas to speak, forcing him to conclude the meeting in a hurry.

The trouble started soon after a condolence motion was moved and Srinivas rose to speak. slogans of ‘DS down down’ disrupted his speech. When all the appeals to restore order fell on deaf ears, the party chief announced that the meeting is over.

Visibly upset over the turn of events, Rosaiah and other leaders left the meeting hall.

Later, YSR’s long-time friend and Rajya Sabha member K.V.P. Ramchandra Rao entered the hall and made an emotional appeal to Jagan’s supporters to remain calm. He broke down while recalling his association with the late leader.

‘If you want his soul to rest in peace, please be calm,’ he appealed with folded hands.

He told them that Congress president Sonia Gandhi would hear their voice while taking a decision.
